iOS 18 introduces exciting features, including Apple’s new AI system, but not every iPhone model is compatible.

Only newer iPhone models will support iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence.

On Monday at its WWDC conference, Apple unveiled iOS 18, the latest update to its iPhone operating system. This update promises users more personalization options for the home screen and control center, the ability to lock and hide applications, an overhauled Photos app, and the groundbreaking Apple Intelligence, Apple’s new AI system for iPhones and other devices.

But will your iPhone support iOS 18? And if so, will it support the Apple Intelligence features? These are the key questions every iPhone owner needs answers to.

Here’s everything you need to know. While you’re here, check out everything announced at WWDC 2024.

Which phones will support iOS 18?

For iOS 18, every iPhone model that currently supports iOS 17 will also support iOS 18. If you’re running iOS 17, you’ll be able to upgrade to iOS 18. Here’s the full list of iPhone models that will support iOS 18:

  • iPhone XS

But will my iPhone support Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence, Apple’s generative AI system for your iPhone, is a significant aspect of iOS 18. This advanced system is set to revolutionize the way users interact with their devices. However, it’s worth noting that Apple Intelligence will be released later this year as a beta and is not currently available on the iOS 18 developer beta.

You can use Apple Intelligence to quickly summarize text in Safari, create personalized images in Messages, and ask Siri to perform more complex tasks than ever before—but Apple Intelligence isn’t coming to every iPhone.

Only a few select iPhone models will support Apple Intelligence:

  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

These models are the only ones equipped with the A17 Pro processor, Apple’s latest and most advanced chipset, which is necessary to support the new on-device AI features that Apple Intelligence will bring later this year. This chipset is crucial for the seamless operation of the AI features, ensuring a smooth and efficient user experience.

It’s a sure bet that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will support Apple Intelligence, but it’s unclear if the entire series will offer these AI features or just specific models. Apple enthusiasts and prospective buyers will need to stay tuned for further announcements to see how broadly these capabilities will be integrated across new devices.
